Tibetan Protester Committed Suicide by Setting Himself on Fire, Measures Taken by Beijing Shows to Worsen the Situation in Tibet
The recent measures taken by Beijing severely harmed the Tibetans’ religious feeling by stationing security personnel around temples and displaying in public the political leaders’ photos. And the arrest of activists and writers further worsens the current situation in Tibet.
At the noon of 19th in February, an 18-year old Lama, named Nianzhu who was from Xiangtang County of Tibetan autonomous prefecture in Sichuan province, committed suicide by setting fire on himself at a location close to the downtown area of Xiangtang County. The police attempted to take away his dead body, but failed as a result of resistance from many Lamas around the Xiangtang Temple. The Lamas from the Temple held ceremonies and prayed in his funeral. Similarly, another person, named Amchoe Sangpo around his 40s in Qinghai province, who was a person-in-charge of a Tibetan temple, also committed suicide by setting fire on himself. He opposed last month to the local authorities for sending security personnel around his temple, but couldn’t stop them from doing so. In the past one year, more than twenty Tibetans committed suicide by setting fire on themselves to protest the oppression from the China central government against their religious belief and cultural traditions. From the New Year’s Eve till now, a short period of forty days, at least fourteen such incidents have happened, involving Tibetans who committed suicide by setting fire on themselves.
Dawa Dorjee, an activist who is dedicated to maintaining the Tibetan language and cultures, was detained by the police, because he complained about the forced closure of some temples by the local authority. Also, Gangkye Drubpa, a Tibetan writer, was taken away from his home by police on February 15, whose whereabouts has never been heard of since.
